This year, we mark World AIDS Day with new hope. I applaud the staunch advocacy of activists. I commend the persistent efforts of health workers. And I pay tribute to the principled stance of human rights defenders and the courage of all those who have joined forces to fight for global progress against the disease.


Countries adopt UNAIDS Fast-Track Strategy to double number of people on life-saving HIV treatment by 2020

An estimated 15.8 million people are now on HIV treatment, a doubling from five years ago, as countries adopt the UNAIDS Fast-Track Strategy using data to fine-tune delivery of HIV prevention and treatment services to reach people being left behind.

A regional HIV testing campaing: a key to first 90 is to be launched by the 1st of December 2015 to intensify the efforts of EECA countries on HIV testing. It is also designed to boost HIV testing rates. 

UNAIDS welcomes new World Health Organization guidelines on the use of antiretroviral medicines

The guidelines recommend that antiretroviral medicines be prescribed to people as soon as possible after their HIV diagnosis regardless of their CD4 count (CD4 is a measure of immune system health).The guidelines also recommend that people at higher risk of HIV infection be given access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as part of a combined HIV prevention strategy.

The International AIDS Society announces Amsterdam as site of the International AIDS Conference in July 2018

The International AIDS Society (IAS) announced that Amsterdam, Netherlands will host the 22nd International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2018). AIDS 2018 will be held on 22-28 July 2018 at the Amsterdam RAI and is expected to bring together some 18,000 participants from around the world.
