Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, non-profit, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency medical assistance to people affected by armed conflict, famines, epidemics, population displacement or natural disasters in more than 70 countries. MSF tackles the health consequences, of major economic and social inequalities with longer-term programs, through which it treats patients with diseases such as tuberculosis, sleeping sickness and HIV/AIDS.

MSF’s decision to intervene in any country or crisis is based solely on an independent assessment of people’s needs – not on political, economic, or religious interests.

At present MSF is in the process of setting up operations in Moldova that will address the needs of both TB and HIV patients.

MSF announced in May, 2009 the closure of the HIV/AIDS-treatment projects in Transnistria, a breakaway region of Moldova unrecognized by the international community
