Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. With 118 member states, a further 20 states holding observer status and offices in over 120 countries, IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. IOM works to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration, to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and internally displaced people. While not part of the United Nations system, IOM maintains close working relations with UN bodies and operational agencies. IOM was assigned by UNAIDS in addressing issues connected to migration and HIV/AIDS.

HIV/AIDS Related Projects and/or Activities

 

Epidemiological Risks of Mobility: HIV/AIDS Prevention for Migrants in Moldova

Total Budget: 133,000 USD
Implementation Period: 2006–2008, 24 months
Implementor/ Management Site: IOM Chisinau

Through this initiative, IOM will support the HIV/AIDS national response by building capacity for migration health management. The project will conduct a mass information and outreach campaign in Moldova and main destination countries (Italy and Russia) to inform migrants of the dangers of HIV infection; facilitate the inclusion of migrants’ interests into national strategies on HIV and foster partnerships with Moldovan Diaspora communities in main destination countries. The project will also improve the body of knowledge and the level of understanding of HIV and health risks that mobility-affected communities from Moldova are exposed to.
