The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is the U.S. government agency which provides economic development and humanitarian assistance to advance U.S. economic and political interests overseas. Since 1993, USAID has delivered more than $300 million in technical assistance, focused primarily on land and energy sector privatization, health and humanitarian needs, rule of law programs, business development, and financial sector reform. USAID is one of the main international stakeholders to support the HIV/AIDS response in Moldova.

HIV/AIDS Related Projects and/or Activities

 

Preventing HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B&C in Moldova

Implementation Period: June 2006 – June 2010
Implementor/ Management Site: Emerging Markets Group, Ltd.

The goal of the program is to decrease the transmission of HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis B and C through cost-effective preventive measures, and ultimately contribute to reducing the public health risk of these diseases. The program has five major objectives:

  1. Strengthen voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) services for HIV/AIDS to meet WHO and UNAIDS standards and expand VCT capacity to integrate viral hepatitis B and C services throughout Moldova;
  2. Strengthen programs in behavior change communications (BCC) in order to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B&C, as well as to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS;
  3. Improve the safety of blood and blood products in Moldova, especially to ensure that blood supplies are free of HIV and hepatitis B&C;
  4. Strengthen the laboratory capacity to diagnose Hepatitis B and C, and improve epidemiological surveillance in Moldova;
  5. Improve guidelines and update safe medical practices in accordance with international standards to reduce cross-contamination with HIV and viral hepatitis in health care facilities and support the implementation of those practices.
